Kerala, February 2024

To Observe, Document and Retrospect the ‘spirit of a place’.

Students embarked on an immersive journey through the architectural wonders of Kochi, Trivandrum, and Varkala in this educational tour. Through drawings, detailed sketches, captivating photographs, and insightful videos, the students were encouraged to explore the intricate interplay between heritage, culture, and lived experiences. The students also gained insights into contemporary architecture through the works of Laurie Baker and Vinu Daniel. The aim was to cultivate a nuanced understanding of architecture through experiencing the built and the unbuilt.

North India, Udaipur, Jaipur, Delhi and Agra

The Educational Tour to North India, encompassing Jaipur, Udaipur, Delhi and Agra was planned to facilitate a profound understanding of India’s rich architectural heritage and its evolution over time. Students gained firsthand experience of the intricate designs and historical significance of Udaipur’s palaces, Jaipur’s astronomical and royal structures, Agra’s Mughal masterpiece, and Delhi’s diverse architectural landmarks. The interactive sessions with local architects provided valuable insights into contemporary architectural practices and challenges. Overall, this immersive journey enhanced students’ appreciation for different architectural styles, fostered a deeper connection with India’s cultural history, and inspired innovative thinking in their future architectural endeavours.

Sri Lanka

Study of  Geoffry Bawa’s projects which he designed on the principles of “Tropical Modernism”. Study of environment and site context to blend with the built component. 

Places visited: Bawa’s Residence, Dutch Fort, Gallery Cafe, Barefoot, Lunuganga, Cinnamon Benthota, Thaal Benthota, Galle City(Dutch city), Kandy, Dambulla Cave Temple, Sigiriya Rock.

Spain

The educational trip to Spain offered RVCA students a captivating journey through the country’s architectural marvels. From the historic streets of Madrid’s Old Town to the awe-inspiring Alhambra Palace in Granada, students explored a rich tapestry of Moorish, Neoclassical, and Modernist influences. Guided tours led by local experts provided invaluable insights into iconic landmarks such as the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and the Cathedral Mosque of Cordoba. Cultural immersion experiences, including the vibrant Festival of Fallas in Valencia, enriched students’ understanding of Spain’s diverse cultural heritage. Despite logistical challenges, the trip fostered a deep appreciation for Spanish architecture and inspired future exploration in the field.
